Camp Guides & Health/Safety
Camp Guides/Brochures:
Health & Safety

Our camper's health and safety is our top priority. Our camps operate in accordance with the high standards of Girl Scouts of the USA, New York State health laws and Suffolk County health regulations. Inspection reports concerning our camps are on file at the health department. Our swimming program and all waterfront activities are administered according to American Red Cross standards. A health supervisor is on duty all day at each camp.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

  • Before camp, please be mindful of your camper's health. At this time, we will not require campers to wear masks unless there is a known exposure.
  • If your camper is sick, do not send them to camp.
  • Campers are dropped off and picked up at Welcome Center, Camp Edey. Parents/Caregivers will remain in their cars.
  • Cleaning and sanitization procedures will be conducted daily.
  • Hand washing station/sanitizers are available around camp and is encouraged often.

Measle Vaccination Policy

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s updated policy will be as follows:

Parents must provide documentation that their child has received two doses of the MMR vaccine. Only medical exemptions, supported by a medical professional, will be accepted. For full policy details, please see below.

Read Full Policy Details

Mandatory Vaccinations for Campers

  • Prior to the start of children's camp, all campers age 4 and older must provide documentation that they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, or laboratory evidence of immunity to the measles, mumps, and rubella.  Documentation of vaccination must be signed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant.
  • The only exception for this requirement is if a camper is unable to receive a vaccination due to a medical reason that is documented in a signed letter from a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant.
  • Although Public Health Law requires religious exemptions to be accepted for schools, there are no such requirements for children's camps, and there will be no allowance for such exemptions at this time.
  • Campers over age 4 who have not had the required doses of the MMR vaccine must begin receiving immunizations immediately. There is a 28-day wait between receiving the first and second dose of the MMR vaccine. Those who intend to attend summer camp this season could be delayed if they do not start receiving immunizations promptly.

Mandatory Vaccinations For Camp Staff

  • Prior to the start of children's camp, all camp staff born on or after January 1, 1957, must provide documentation that they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, or laboratory evidence of immunity to the measles, mumps, and rubella. Documentation of vaccination must be signed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant.
  • The only exception for this requirement is if a camp staff member is unable to receive a vaccination due to a medical reason that is documented in a signed letter from a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant.
  • Although Public Health Law requires religious exemptions to be accepted for schools, there are no such requirements for children's camps, and there will be no allowance for such exemptions at this time.
  • Camp staff who have not had both doses of the MMR vaccine must begin receiving immunizations immediately. There is a 28-day wait between receiving the first and second doses of the MMR vaccine. Those who intend to work at summer camp at the beginning of the season could be delayed if they do not start receiving immunizations promptly.

The safety and well-being of our campers and staff continue to be a top priority.  While this policy update was not an easy decision, the procedures implemented are necessary steps in protecting our campers and community members from measles.

2022 Camp Update

These past 2 years have been challenging as we try to navigate through the ever-changing world. As we continue to move forward and bring back bigger and better adventures for our Girl Scouts, we also want to make sure we do things right. Because in the words of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, “Right is right, even if no one else does it.”

Some of the projects set to begin this Spring have turned into major renovations, and in reviewing the scope of work, we’ve realized that we will not be able to open Camp Sobaco in time for Summer Camp.

We understand that many of our Girl Scouts and their families were looking forward to the return of Camp Sobaco. We were too. But the renovations that will take place this Spring and Summer will help rejuvenate the camp and will allow us to give our Girl Scouts even better experiences. We appreciate your patience, and we look forward to the return of incredible outdoor adventures next year.

We’re also working on updates and improvements to our Camp Edey location, and we are pleased to announce that Camp Edey will open as planned and will offer. our four programs to help meet everyone’s needs. (See below for more info.)

We are adding extra activities for our younger girls and weekly trips for girls in grades 4-6. We’re also adding Camp Sobaco as a pick-up location for bus transportation to Camp Edey for families that live closer to Yaphank.

Girl Scout camp experiences create lasting memories and encourage leadership development. They also give girls the chance to be part of a worldwide sisterhood of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides that is 10 million strong. We hope you’ll join us as we continue to improve our camps and give girls the keys to unlock their next adventures.
