GSSC is proud to offer RED CROSS Learn-to-Swim Courses!

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County is now offering Red Cross Learn-to-Swim courses during the camp day for your convenience! Students will progress through the levels at their own pace, mastering the skills in one level before advancing to the next. Each level of our Learn-to-Swim class includes training in basic water safety and helping others in an emergency, in addition to stroke development. Children will be tested and placed in the appropriate skill level. For a schedule of offerings and a description of each level, please see below.

Cost is $125/4-Day Session, 45 minute lesson.

Swim Levels:

Red Cross Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

  • Enter/Exit Water Safely (steps, ramp, ladders, side pool)
  • Blow bubbles through mouth & nose in water
  • Bibbing
  • Open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front & Back glide and recover to vertical position
  • Back glide and recover to vertical position
  • Back float
  • Roll from front to back & back to front
  • Tread with using arm and hand actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action on front
  • Alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action on back
  • Combined arm and leg action on front and back
  • Age-appropriate Water Safety Topics
 

Red Cross Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from side
  • Exit water ladder, ramp, step and side.
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety
  • Rotary breathing
  • Back Float
  • Survival Float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
  • Tread water
  • Flutter and Dolphin kicks on front
  • Scissor and Breaststroke Kicks
  • Front Crawl and elementary backstroke
  • Age-appropriate Water Safety Topics
 

Red Cross Level 3: Stroke Development - Building on the Skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water.

  • Enter water by jumping from side, fully submerge then recover to the surface and return to the side.
  • Headfirst entries from the side, fully submerge then recover to the surface and return to the side.
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety
  • Rotary breathing
  • Back Float
  • Survival Float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
  • Tread water
  • Flutter and Dolphin kicks on front
  • Scissor and Breaststroke Kicks
  • Front Crawl and elementary backstroke
